Jessie Lu Hutchinson

I am a freelance children's book illustrator based in Cambridge, UK.

I specialise in creating whimsical and colourful illustrations primarily for the 4–8 age range (picture books). I adore creating work for children, their imagination, clarity of thought and range of outward emotions is something I admire and try to capture in my illustrations. One of the best things in the world for me is seeing my books being actually read and enjoyed by children.

My work is often characterised by a blend of gouache textures and digital painting. I prefer to create initial sketches and character designs with pencils and gouache, before transposing them into Procreate for the final designs, that way I feel I retain more of my authentic style and line.

I have two published books, both with author Bex Grace:

Ivy Dog and the Tasty Treats (2023)

The Hospital Stay with Frimley Health (2025)

The latter gained attention after being featured on BBC News for its merit as a resource to help children and parents prepare for hospital operations.

I hold a degree in English Literature from the University of Exeter. My lifelong passion for art—rekindled by studying children's literature—drove me to pursue illustration professionally in 2021. When I'm not illustrating, you can find me exhibiting my fine art and ceramics locally, or making miniature things.
